Trip Planning

The weather in the Andes can change quickly. Be sure to bring along full winter clothing, goggles and gloves including a good hardshell jacket and pants and a warm insulating mid-layer – remember, it’s going to be winter in Argentina! Learn more about traveling with your gear here!

This Argentina backcountry trip is recommended for advanced skiers and splitboarders. Come prepared to explore the best advanced off-piste terrain at the resorts and to head deep into Patagonia’s backcountry. You will want to be in good physical shape and keen on some uphill touring out of the resorts and earning your turns out of our pristine backcountry lodge.

We will be spending 2 nights in a backcountry lodge or domes. Our plan is to travel with just the necessities for this portion of the tour, leaving anything you will not need behind at our hotel in Bariloche (we return to the same hotel). We suggest bringing a small packable waterproof duffle bag (dry bag) to carry what you will need on our journey to the domes. This way we travel light with our skis/boards, ski backpack, boots and small duffle bag with the necessities.

FAQ
FAQ
  • How long has PowderQuest been operating guided trips?
PowderQuest has proudly been leading trips for over 2 decades. Their Chile and Argentina guided adventures began in July 1999.
  • Is my trip departure guaranteed?
No, as each trip requires a minimum number of guests in order to run, please wait to make travel arrangements and book flights until you have received confirmation that your departure has been confirmed.
  • Can I choose my roommate?
Yes. If you have a roommate request, please let us know. By default, we will place two people of the same gender in a room with two beds.
  • Can I book a private room?
Yes. Single occupancy rooms may be available at an additional cost of $995. Please contact us if you are interested and note that single rooms are subject to availability, and will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. For this trip, a single room fee will be obtain for the nights in Villa Angostura and Bariloche. At the backcountry lodge, you will be upgraded from a bunk room to a shared twin room with a private bath.
  • What backcountry ski setup should I bring? Can I rent?
We suggest a touring ski with a waist of 95-120mm + touring bindings + skins. Touring bindings can be frame style ( Salomon Shift, Marker Kingpin, etc) or a lighter tech style ( Dynafit etc.). Make sure your binding is compatible with ski crampons (an attachment we use when climbing firm snow). Skins should be synthetic, cut specifically for your ski, and with good glue. There are limited rentals available, please enquire at the time of booking if you may need touring rentals.
  • What type of splitboard setup should I bring? Can I rent?
You’ll need a full splitboard setup with bindings and skins. Skins should be synthetic, cut specifically for your board, and with good glue. Make sure your binding is compatible with splitboard crampons (an attachment we use when climbing firm snow). There are limited rentals available, please enquire at the time of booking if you may need touring rentals.
  • I am a beginner / intermediate / advanced level of ski tourer / splitboarder. Will there be terrain for me?
This Argentina backcountry trip is recommended for advanced skiers and snowboarders. Come prepared to explore the best advanced off-piste terrain at the resorts and to head deep into Patagonia’s backcountry. You will want to be in good physical shape and keen on some uphill touring out of the resorts and earning your turns out of our pristine backcountry lodge.
  • How much touring or hiking is involved on the Lift Assisted or Advanced Off-Piste trips?
These trips are dependent on snow conditions and groups as to the amount of ski touring or hiking that takes place. If fresh snow is in abundance, we may ski the resorts, or ski backcountry areas within close striking distance to resorts. If there are extended periods of high pressure and little in the way of powder snow in or near the ski resorts, our objectives tend to shift towards getting to areas where we can ski powder/better snow and get away from the crowds in and near the ski resorts. During these times since the easy to get to areas are often tracked, we have to push out a little further and tour or hike longer. We understand that long days touring or hiking with skis strapped to your backpack may not always be fore everyone. Having 2 guides mean that we can accommodate 2 different programs if guests wish to do different things (ie. Long tours vs short tours, staying within resort vs touring or hiking). Our ultimate goal is always to get our guests the best untracked skiing conditions that are available, wherever that may be.
  • Can my dietary restrictions be accommodated?
We can accommodate most requests. Just let us know when you fill out your pre-trip questionnaire, and we will have everything taken care of upon your arrival.
  • Can I place a deposit instead of paying the full amount?
Contact Customer Care at 1.866.386.1590 if you prefer to only pay your $600 per person deposit. Note that regardless of paying full payment or deposit at time of booking, we will consider $100 to be a non-refundable deposit in accordance with our terms and conditions. Full payment is due 90 days prior to departure.
  • What if I need to cancel or postpone my trip?
You may cancel for any reason up to 10 days (Risk Free Window) after paying your deposit or full trip price for a full refund. This gives you peace of mind no one will take your spot as you arrange vacation time and look into flights, etc. For cancellations made by Client after the Risk Free Booking Window and up to 91 days before your guided trip, your deposit can be refunded (less a $100 fee) or become a credit know as a Lifetime Deposit. Your Lifetime Deposit does not expire and can be used for any available future guided trip with PowderQuesy in South America. You may also transfer the deposit as a gift to a friend. Within 90 days of trip departure, the following cancellation fees apply. 90 - 61 days prior to departure, 50% trip cost refund. 60 - 31 days prior to trip departure, 25% trip cost refunded. 30 or fewer days, no refund.
  • Do I need to purchase travel insurance?
Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement if you are forced to cancel your trip for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to cover medical help, emergency transport, theft and/or accidental damage while traveling. We recommend World Nomads. Please Note: The "Standard" plan from World Nomads does not cover backcountry skiing or snowboarding, or off-piste travel. The "Explorer" plan has coverage for backcountry skiing and snowboarding and off-piste travel. See more coverage information here: https://www.worldnomads.com/usa/help/insurance/buying-travel-insurance/skiing-snowboarding It is mandatory for all Clients to provide evidence of insurance for ski travel that covers personal accident, medical expenses, and air ambulance (emergency evacuation). If you are joining our Off-Piste or Backcountry trips, you need to make sure your insurance covers off-piste and backcountry skiing and snowboarding in the countries you will be visiting. For trips involving mechanized access in the backcountry (snowcats, snowmobiles, helicopters, etc.) be sure your policy covers these activities. Evidence of this insurance needs to be provided to evo and PowderQuest. In the event evidence of insurance is not provided, evo and PowderQuest reserve the right to cancel the Client’s reservation.
Testimonials
Argentina with PowderQuest was one of the biggest adventures my husband and i ever had. Despite some variable weather conditions, our guides Mo and Maxi did a fabulous job arranging the trip so that we would maximize our experience and opportunities for fresh snow. The restaurants and side trips our guides coordinated were tons of fun. Skiing/riding, accommodations and food at Baguales were the highlight of the trip.
