Before the days of ratchets, click systems, and BOAs -- snowboarding was ruled by laced boots. Traditional lacing has come a long way from the days of wearing your skate shoes on a Snurfer, allowing you to carry your unique street style to the mountains with their one-of-a-kind custom fit. In the past couple of years, we've seen some of our favorite brands expand their traditional lace line-up and offer more and more traditional lacing systems on their pro-models. We asked both riders and industry insiders about this renewed direction, and why they love their laces.

DC Mutiny - Ilkka Backstrom

"I like to ride backcountry, resorts or whatever comes my way, that’s why I like the Mutiny it’s the chameleon of boots and suits every type of riding. The traditional lacing is dope because you can tighten the laces wherever you need more support. I’ve also never been into the ski boot feel so when it comes down to equipment, I always like traditional, less fancy bits and pieces. Keep it classy."

thirtytwo Lashed - Desiree Melancon

“I’ve been riding the Lashed for over ten years and I appreciate the way they my feet feel when attached to the board and a comfort exists from knowing the boot so well. I always stress the art and try to make them look like nothing that’s on the market. This season has a grayscale 35mm photograph on the outside with an illustration constructed out of my shadow and an extensive poem exploring memory on the tongue. I like traditional lacing because I know I tied my boots. It’s a habit, it’s the “go time” signifier. When I lace up, I’m ready to film, hit the spot, ride for the day, whatever. There’s an attachment to the routine.”

thirtytwo Mullair - Nicolas Müller

"This boot is designed from the base up entirely how I always thought the perfect boot should look -- bad ass aesthetically and technically. The heel cushion cup is a game-changer and will erase heel bruises from your life, while Michelin outsoles keep you stable on slippery slopes. Traditional lacing to me is key, I can lace exactly as tight as I want in certain areas like this and I feel like there’s nothing that could go wrong out there… and I am talking way out there!"

Burton Kendo - Chris DiMarco

“Having grown up on the East Coast I would say I have a ride anything type of style. The Kendo has all the features that I look for, without any of the extra bells and whistles that drive the price too high. My favorite part about this boot, and Burton boots in general, is Shrinkage.  We have found a way to reduce the footprint of our boots a full size.  Since I am a size 10, this allows my footprint to be the same as a traditional 9 which cuts down on toe drag when carving.  It’s allowed me to ride narrower waist width boards than I used to which is epic! I went with traditional lacing because I like having the ability to quickly and easily fix a traditional lace in the backcountry if something goes wrong and the feel of lace has just always worked for me.”

Vans Hi Standard OG - Jake Kuzyk

The Hi-Standard has always been a go to for me. I can put them on and know they are gonna work well for whatever I’m doing. It’s a simple classic lace boot and I always appreciate how the Hi-Standard can adapt to any colorway. The simple pattern blocking makes its really nice to create an interesting design. I wear lots of Old Skools so it’s for sure inspired from that. They feel slim on your foot, they’re so comfortable I kinda just forget about them. I’ve always appreciated the feel and reliability of traditional lacing - Tight in some places and loose in others, and I just like more classic footwear so laces are a must for me.
