Join evoTrip and Picture on an exclusive, truly one-of-a-kind adventure as we surf and explore northern Spain’s Basque Country.

País Vasco, or Spain’s Basque Country, has its own vibe, and we’re all about it. This sometimes overlooked pocket of the Iberian Peninsula offers a unique mix of rugged scenery, vibrant culture, and of course, world-class surf. Located a half hour from the cosmopolitan city of Bilbao on the northern Atlantic coast, our homebase for the week is the beautifully modern & sustainably driven Moana Surf House in Sopela.

Located within walking distance of several different beaches, including two of our three surf beaches, we’ll spend the week surfing Sopela (plus a jaunt to Zarautz) and exploring the iconic destinations of San Sebastian and Bilbao. Whether you’re new to surfing or an advanced rider, the local pros at La Salbaje Surf Eskola can provide tailored coaching or simply step back for more of a free surf vibe. (Optional) skate opportunities abound as well, with amazing access to skate bowls and parks in the area. This trip is a balance of scheduled activities and downtime, with plenty of chances to do your own thing, whether it's hiking, yoga, SUP, trail running, paragliding, or just hanging at the beach.

Sponsored by our brand partners at Picture, this trip is also full of fun extras, including a session with pro surfers (TBD). Trust us, you won't want to miss this one!

Itinerary
  • 1
    Day number 1
Arrive to Bilbao International Airport (BIO), where you’ll be greeted and transferred by private van to your accommodations at Moana Surf House. Settle into your room, and depending on what time you arrive, head out to one of the nearby beaches, relax at the spa, or take a rip around the hotel’s skate park. We’ll meet as a group for a welcome dinner at Moana.

    Meal included: Dinner (Moana)
  • 2
    Day number 2
Rise and shine for your first morning in Sopelana. After breakfast, meet your coaches at La Salbaje Surf Eskola and get your gear sorted before heading out for your guided morning surf session or lesson. Depending on your level and objectives for the trip, the folks at La Salbaje will ensure you’re set up to strengthen your skills (if necessary) and sample the best surf in the area. Afterward, you’ll have time to explore town or the surrounding area at your own pace, grab lunch, and take advantage of the siesta to relax and shake off any jet lag. You’ll reconvene for an afternoon surf session at one of the three local beaches: La Salvaje, Sopela, or Plentzia.

After your afternoon surf session, head back to Moana to relax and freshen up before an incredible 4-course dinner out at a traditional Basque sagardotegia (cider house).

Meals included: Breakfast (Moana), Dinner (Basque Cider House)
  • 3
    Day number 3
Repeat! After your surf session this morning, you’ll have an optional skate class at a nearby skate bowl. Note: there’s also an oceanside skate park in Getxo, 2 miles from Moana. Other potential options for your day include hiking, yoga, SUP, trail running, paragliding, or just hanging at the beach. After your afternoon surf session, head back to Moana to relax before dinner.

    Meals included: Breakfast (Moana)
  • 4
    Day number 4
Between our morning and afternoon surf sessions today, we’ll take the metro into Bilbao (35 minutes) for a day of discovery in this urban gem and certainly one of the highlights of Basque Country. Renowned for its imaginative architecture, world-class food scene, lively culture, and beautiful parks, Bilbao offers endless possibilities. Whether you stay with the group or do your own thing, the time is yours. We highly recommend a trip to the Guggenheim Museum or a wander through Old Town (Casco Viejo). After lunch in the city, we’ll hop a train back to Sopela and possibly snag a quick siesta before it’s time to surf again.

During the afternoon surf session we will be joined by a crew from Picture Organic including 2 of their professional surfers; Damien Castera and Marie Chauche. Spend time in the water getting to know them, and watching them in action! In the evening, the Picture folks as well as local surfers Kepa Acero and Natxo Gonzalez will be hanging around for a meet and greet happy hour. There will also be a showing of two surf films to cap off a very full day of Spanish surf culture.

Meals included: Breakfast (Moana), Dinner (Moana)
  • 5
    Day number 5
Today will be a good one! Grab an early breakfast and catch our private van 1 hour east to Zarautz. The swell here is accessible for all and the views alone are worth it. From there we’ll go a half hour further to the gorgeous seaside city of San Sebastian. Meander along cobblestone streets in the Parte Vieja, head to Playa de la Concha or Playa de Zurriola, or head to Pukas Surf Shop to grab a cortado (coffee) and take a peek at their custom boards. Be sure to eat and drink well at one of the countless, top-notch cafes and pintxos (Basque tapas) bars before bidding “agur”. We’ll head back to Moana for the evening.

Meals included: Breakfast (Moana), Dinner (Moana)
  • 6
    Day number 6
It’s our last full day together, and we’re going to make it count! Enjoy your morning and afternoon surf sessions with your coaches (now friends) at La Salbaje Surf. In-between, it may be a great day for a hike, skate, trail run, yoga class, or to knock that beach cliff paragliding off your bucket list! For our final evening, we’ll head out for a special night of pintxos and celebration in Bilbao.

    Meal included: Breakfast (Moana)

Area Information

Basque Country

Soaring mountains, renowned Atlantic swells, and the quintessential Basque spirit give this area its own captivating allure. Hands down one of the best surfing areas in Europe, the Basque Country runs roughly 125 miles along the coastline of northern Spain and into southwestern France. We’ve selected the Sopelana region as our base for its wide selection of beaches, consistent swell, and greater accessibility. Zarautz is another excellent area we’ll hit up, known as a super friendly zone for all experience levels and in a scenic setting.

Trip Planning

Late spring is a really lovely time in Basque Country, as you’ll beat the majority of the crowds as well as the majority of the rain. Expect average daytime temps in the 60s and 70s, with nighttime temps creeping as low as 50. Be prepared for occasional wind and rain, of course, as we are on the Atlantic coast.

Remember that your trip package includes rental gear but it never hurts to bring your own if you’ve got it!

FAQ
FAQ
  • Can I pay deposit, or is full payment required to book?
You can secure your spot with a $750 deposit if you prefer to wait to make full payment. Otherwise, full payment will be collected 60 days prior to the trip. If you opt to pay deposit only for now, please call in to Customer Care at 1.866.386.1590 to apply payment.
  • Is this trip guaranteed to run?
There is a minimum of 6 people required to run this trip. Please wait to make travel arrangements until you have received confirmation from evoTrip.
  • What are the accommodations like?
Much more than an accommodation, Moana Eco Surf House is a place where you can enjoy nature and outdoor sports without giving up comfort. We are located in a privileged environment on the Basque Coast, in Sopela (Bizkaia), 400 meters (less than ¼ mile) from the beach, 300 meters (10 min. walk) to the metro station, and surrounded by some of the most beautiful and breathtaking places of our coast. Take advantage of the spa, indoor skating area, yoga classes, gardens, a multi-use geodesic dome, large indoor and outdoor terraces and modern, tasteful rooms (23 total) with private bathrooms. Our spacious and modern surf bar has a dining room specializing in healthy, locally sourced food.
  • Can I book a private room?
All rooms are single rooms with a double sized bed, which can be double or single occupancy based on travelers preferences.
  • What is the food like?
Breakfasts and most dinners are included and cuisine offered is healthy and local. Vegetarian, vegan, and other preferences welcome. All types of dietary restrictions can be accommodated, please just let the staff know your needs.
  • What skill/experience level is required for this trip? What kinds of breaks are in the area?
All ability levels are welcome, and we'll have access to several different zones in the area: La Salvaje (both reef and beach breaks), Sopela (exposed beach break), and Plentzia (sheltered beach break). If break type doesn't mean anything to you yet, don't worry! Again, there is something for everyone. La Salbaje Surf Eskola's trained surf instructors will build your surf confidence to the next level, regardless of where you are in your journey. For beginners, this will mean starting on dry land but making sure you have plenty of time in the water.
  • Should I bring my own surfboard?
If you are an intermediate or above surfer, or just prefer to use your own equipment, we recommend bringing your own surfboard. Rentals are limited, and your trip package includes a foam log-style surfboard for easy wave catching. Performance rentals in Spain are hard to come by, but if you prefer to not bring your own board and ride something higher performance than a foamie, please let us know and we will try to organize that for you. Subject to availability and additional fees.
  • When and how do I meet up with the group upon my arrival?
You’ll be met at the arrivals hall in Bilbao International Airport and transferred to Moana Surf House in Sopelana (approximately 10-15 minutes away).
  • What is the maximum number of guests on the trip?
    12 guests.
  • What about Covid-19? Will I need to be vaccinated for the trip?
While we are optimistic that conditions related to Covid-19 will continue to improve, we are continuing to monitor the situation globally and consider the health and safety of our guests our top priority. We will continue to comply with the latest guidance from the CDC, WHO, and local authorities. If for any reason, evoTrip is forced to cancel your trip, including due to restrictions or conditions related to Covid-19, you will receive the option to either join a future evoTrip or receive a full refund. The European Union is requiring stricter protocols for U.S. citizens to visit, and as of September 2021 Spain in particular has announced that U.S. travelers must show proof of full vaccination in order to enter the country.
  • Should I purchase travel insurance?
YES! While it is not required, we always recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement if you are forced to cancel your trip for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to cover medical help, emergency transport, theft and/or accidental damage while traveling. We recommend World Nomads.
  • What if I need to change or cancel the trip?
We understand the need for flexibility now more than ever. If you cannot or no longer wish to join your scheduled trip, we are offering the option to forward your deposit to a future evoTrip (at no cost) up to 65 days prior to departure date. However, if you need to cancel, the deposit for the trip is non-refundable and cancellations will be subject to a cancellation fee (see policy below). For this reason, we recommend purchasing travelers insurance, which will cover the cost of your trip in extenuating circumstances. All cancellations must be submitted to evo in writing, are effective as of the date we receive them according to our internal records, and will be subject to a cancellation fee as follows (amounts are per person and only apply to amount paid after the non-refundable deposit amount): Cancellation 60 days or more prior to trip departure - Non-Refundable Deposit. Cancellation between 30 and 59 days prior to trip departure - 50% of total booking cost. Cancellation less than 30 days prior to departure - 100% of total booking cost. Cancellation policy for custom trips may differ from these terms and will be communicated prior to booking. No refunds will be made if you voluntarily leave a trip for any reason after the trip has begun. The same applies if you leave a trip or cannot fully participate in a trip due to injury or illness. Refunds will be at the discretion of the Company if you are involuntarily forced to leave a trip for any reason. No refunds will be made for any accommodation, transport, sightseeing, meals or services not utilized.
Testimonials
The trip was excellent from start to finish. Very well-planned and with a wonderful group of people. The surf schools were great and the instructors were top notch! The surf itself was subject to Mother Nature, but we had a great time no matter the conditions.
