Pick your dates and your crew (or go solo) for a guided day of skiing or splitboarding in the backcountry.

Escape the resort crowds by earning your turns on a backcountry skiing adventure in Colorado’s Summit County with our partners at Colorado Adventure Guides. Backcountry skiing provides the opportunity to extend your ski season and experience something few skiers ever will: skiing powder in solitude. Traverse a high alpine ridgeline to a snow-covered summit—maybe even 14,265 ft Quandary Peak—and ski back to where you started. CAG’s professionally-trained guides have your back. We scout out the best conditions and assess avalanche danger and other potentially dangerous conditions that may not be evident to the untrained eye.

Not an expert skier? Never skied in the backcountry? No problem! If you can ski Vail’s back bowls, you can ski in our backcountry. Our experienced and professional guides will teach uphill and downhill skiing technique, risk management, and talk you through decision-making in the backcountry. Already started your backcountry journey? Guided backcountry adventures are great on their own or the perfect way to practice and digest what you learned in an intro or AIARE class. Bring your own gear or take advantage of our rental packages to get fully equipped with alpine touring boots, skis, bindings, avalanche beacon, shovels, and probes.

Price is per person, based on the number of people in your group. Pick an option from the date range below.

Below is a list of required and recommended equipment for your adventure. Dressing properly and having the correct equipment will help Colorado Adventure Guides provide a safer and more fun experience for your group. Though we cannot control the weather, we can make sure that you are prepared for whatever conditions we encounter in this mountain environment. Remember, the weather can change quickly and drastically.

Our guides recommend wearing technical clothing on all higher level hikes and winter activities, but is never a bad idea regardless of which activity you participate in. Technical clothing (polypro, merino wool, etc) is designed to help regulate body temperature and keep perspiration off of the skin. Not only is it safer, it dries faster, and is much more comfortable during exercise. When possible, please try to avoid wearing cotton like hoodies, denim jeans, cotton socks, etc.

Colorado Adventure Guides strives to be as environmentally conscious as possible. We strongly urge you to bring your own hydration system or Nalgene bottles and fill them before heading to the trailhead. This reduces plastic pollution and the chance of accidentally leaving litter behind. Plus, our water is fresh and delicious up here in Summit County!

Testimonials
The Intro to Splitboarding course with Justin Ibarra was tailored to my needs as a new splitboarder. I learned new techniques and knowledge that I look forward to using when I get my Avy 1 certification this season. I highly recommend this course to anyone who's new to the backcountry.
