Ride centuries-old Peruvian singletrack and explore Machu Picchu on this 7-day South American adventure.

The mountain biking in Peru is considered to be some of the finest in the world. The soaring peaks, rich culture and history, and the Inca sites around every corner all make it a must-ride mountain bike bucket list destination. Oh, did we mention the trails? Paths have been worn into the peaks for centuries as millions of feet have walked these routes. The smooth, well worn trails are the staple of almost every ride, making for exquisite mountain biking.

On this Peru mountain bike trip you will not only explore the great trails, but also actual ancient Inca roads, dating from the 1400’s. Unparalleled for their beauty and harmony with the landscape, these roads are a sheer joy to descend on. This one-week mountain bike trip package, powered by KB Tambo Tours, is handcrafted exclusively for evo and features a bit of everything - some sightseeing of the Sacred Valley’s most famous Inca sites, locally sourced fresh food, incredible culture, outstanding mountain biking, and of course a visit to Machu Picchu - one of the 7 New Wonders of the World.

Basing ourselves in the oldest continually inhabited town in all of the Americas, Ollantaytambo, we will spend the week doing mostly shuttled riding. Meaning we drive to the top, and then ride down the trail. There are some climbing opportunities for those who prefer, but the mountains here are incredibly steep and climbing them often takes all day. Small groups in our van and local Peruvian mountain bike guides bring the highest level of authenticity and connection to this fascinating culture.
Please note: We have 2 levels of this trip available, intermediate and advanced. Please see FAQ for more information on skill levels.

Itinerary
Itinerary
  • 1
    Day number 1
Your mountain bike trip begins with your arrival from Lima and into Cusco airport (CUZ). KB Tambo Tours will be there waiting for you, ready to make the gorgeous, two-hour drive through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo, our home base for the week. After check-in we will build up the bikes and take our first ride which is a short but fun 5 mile loop on singletrack just outside of town.
  • 2
    Day number 2
After breakfast we will first make a short drive up a valley to a place called “Pumamarca,” or, ‘Place of the Puma’ in the Incan language of Quechua. A rarely visited, pre-Incan site that also happens to have a tremendous singletrack leaving its entrance that stretches all the way back to town. Then after lunch, we’ll head to another famous trail that links two popular Inca sites to visit, this time the Salt Mines of Maras, and the mysterious rings of Moray. The 8.5 mile trail is rolling hills of fast baked clay singletrack and ends down at the Urubamba river. It’s so good that if there is time, we’ll go back up and do it a second time!
  • 3
    Day number 3
Today we are heading up right away in our van to the Continental Divide of South America, “Abra Malaga” at over 14,000 feet. We drop in here, taking the famous “Inca Avalanche” racetrack, past waterfalls, Inca sites and indigenous communities until finally arriving at the valley floor some 5,000 vertical feet below! Then after stopping in Ollantaytambo for lunch, we will spend the afternoon on a ride known as “Paucarbamba,” another baked clay, fast and twisty descent through the red dirt and once again arriving at the valley floor far below.
  • 4
    Day number 4
We have one more day of hard riding before visiting Machu PIcchu, and today that means we are heading to a zone called “Calca.” We will start again up in the clouds on the Continental Divide. This time we will descend on a long, beautiful Incan road that stretches for miles downhill before entering a narrow, twisty canyon complete with Incan staircases and other surprises. This is one of the funnest trails in all of Peru - so, of course, we will do it twice!
  • 5
    Day number 5
It is time to visit Machu Picchu, one of the 7 New Wonders of the World! We’ll leave Ollantaytambo early today and board the train to Aguas Calientes and then up to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. The hour and a half train ride will take us back in time through the jungles of the sacred valley of the Incas. When you arrive your guide will be on hand if you wish to facilitate logistics they will also be available to point out of of the hidden secrets and lesser known pathways. Return on the train late afternoon back to Ollantaytambo, your hotel and a well-deserved nights rest.
  • 6
    Day number 6
One last day of riding, some of the most gorgeous and flowy mountain bike terrain that Peru has to offer. The region of Lamay is one of our favorites and its lush valleys hold centuries old singletrack, worn smooth and pitched at the perfect angle of descent for two wheels. So good that once again, we’ll do it twice! Afterwards, we will travel to the bustling and energetic city of Cusco for a world class meal and the option of sampling Cusco’s famous nightlife.
  • 7
    Day number 7
Today marks the end of the trip, but not until you have had enough - we are available the entire day with both van and guides for anyone who flies out later today or not at all; there is ample fun riding in the city of Cusco, and we have all day to do it! We also have our driver and van at your disposal, to take you to the airport whenever is most convenient for you.

The Sacred Valley

Also known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas or the Urubamba Valley, this valley is home to some of the most important Inca archaeological sites including Machu Picchu. Stretching from the Urubamba River, around 6,700 ft elevation, to the tops of massive Andean peaks such as Mount Veronica, 19,334 ft, the valley is known for its sweeping planes and steep mountain slopes. On this trip we will enjoy the mountains of the Sacred Valley by bike and stay in Ollantaytambo, the oldest continually inhabited town in all the Americas. This area is not only beautiful, it is also home to some of the best mountain biking in Peru.

FAQ
FAQ
  • Is my departure guaranteed?
No, KB Tambo must reach a minimum number of guests (4) to operate each trip, please wait to make travel arrangements and book flights until you have received confirmation from KB Tambo Travel.
  • Is airfare included?
No, airfare is not included in this package.please be sure to wait for confirmation from KB Tambo Tours before you make travel arrangements.
  • Where does the trip begin and how do I get there?
This trip begins and ends at the Cusco, Peru airport (CUZ). You should book your flights to arrive between 8am to 10am on Day 1 (Sunday) or stay in a hotel overnight in Cusco, and depart between 3pm - 5pm on Day 7 (Saturday). A representative from KB Tambo Travel will pick you up at the airport in Cusco and drop you off there at the end of the trip. You will have constant support and an English-speaking guide throughout the trip. Upon booking, KB Tambo Travel will send you a complete welcome packet that goes into everything you will need to know in great detail.
  • Can I bring a friend or significant other who doesn’t ride?
Yes, absolutely. KB Tambo Travel allows others to buy the trip and tag along on all the rides, participating in nearby side hikes or cultural experiences. Please contact KB Tambo Travel via email at [email protected] for more details.
  • How difficult is the mountain biking on the trip?
The intermediate trip option is rated intermediate skill level and above. That means you should have a solid comfort level while riding a mountain bike off-road on singletrack, and a fair amount of experience doing so. It is not an expert-rated trip, although the advanced trip we offer will be more difficult and move faster than our immediate skill-level trip. There are no mandatory jumps or drops or extreme steeps. There are, however, a lot of rocks in the trails and riding near the edge of a long fall or drop-off is definitely part of where we will go. Our guides are experts and trained to warn you of these ahead of time to prepare. Walking around obstacles is totally okay too, so someone with the right attitude, patience, and common sense can overcome skill level to a certain extent. If you have any further questions about if your skill level is appropriate, just let us know by emailing [email protected].
  • Do I need to be in good shape?
A common concern for people joining a group mountain bike trip is whether they will be able to “keep up”. We want to stress that this will not be an issue. First of all, the vast majority of the riding is downhill. We ride in a van to shuttle the bikes to the top of the trail. This is because the mountains are so tall it would take all day to climb up them, so we don’t. This also means the group stays together much easier. No one is in a hurry and the scenery and culture tend to shock even the most jaded of travelers. Frequent stops for photos, talking to a local farmer, etc are common and enable us to move around and catch up as a group without any stress.
  • Will I have to be with the group the whole time?
KB Tambo is known for a laid-back organizational style that often lets you feel like you are on a private trip. Many people may be reluctant to take a "group tour". Trust us, we understand! We think that the combination of traveling with like-minded other folks, along with not being treated like a tourist at all, makes for a great time. But yes, you can always do part of a day on your own or go out to dinner separately.
  • Can I extend my trip?
Yes. Many people do, and KB Tambo Travel can either give you some informal pointers or play a more substantial part of your trip planning, whichever you prefer. The hiking trails here are incredible and highly recommended. Other common add-ons include the Amazon Jungle, Lake Titicaca, and Colca Canyon in Arequipa.
  • Do I need to bring my own bike?
For the advanced trip: Yes, it is highly recommended that you bring your own bike for the advanced skill-level mountain biking trip. These are technical rides with a focus on fast-paced riding experiences, so having your own bike from home is highly beneficial. A common concern is the logistics and cost of flying a bike. It's easier than you think and the cost will still be less than renting a high-quality mountain bike in Peru, while also giving you the advantage of riding your own bike which you are already familiar with and likely much higher quality than a rental. If you still wish to rent a higher-quality mountain bike in Peru, we are happy to help and can find you a solution. Please contact us for details. For the intermediate trip: No, we will provide your mountain bike rental. These bikes are not high-quality like those that most people ride at home, but they are adequate for the average rider. If you still wish to rent your own higher-quality mountain bike in Peru, we are happy to help and can find you a solution. Please contact KB Tambo Travel via email at [email protected] for more details.
  • What are the accommodations like?
In Ollantaytambo, we stay in our favorite hotel, Tunupa Lodge (www.TunupaLodge.com) We like it for the simple, clean and bright rooms, the open yard, the amazing views of the mountains and ruins, and especially the resident llama! The delicious breakfast buffet they provide each morning is an added bonus.
  • How many travelers are in the group?
Maximum of 24, minimum of 4.
  • Do I need travel insurance?
While it is not required, we always recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement if you are forced to cancel your trip for unforeseeable reasons or if you need to cover medical services, emergency transport, and/or theft or accidental damage while traveling. We recommend World Nomads (https://www.worldnomads.com/usa/). KB Tambo Travel does not provide any type of insurance whatsoever and recommends checking with your own health insurance provider to determine whether such insurance will cover such a trip.
  • What is the food like?
Breakfast is included each day in your hotel. Peruvian breakfasts are simple but plentiful and nourishing, usually including local fresh fruit, optional scrambled eggs or omelet, fresh local bread, and coffee or juice. Food in Peru is very good and has a great international reputation! There are options for either 'local' or 'tourist' restaurants.
  • How do lunches and dinners work?
Most days are spent in and around Ollantaytambo and the Sacred Valley where there are several good restaurants serving local fresh fare, but catering to a variety of international tastes. Lunches average $10, dinners $15. You will usually eat together as a group (the guides really do know the best places to eat!), but you are always welcome to go off on your own culinary adventure. The village of Ollytaytambo is fun to walk around and explore each evening.
  • How much extra cash should I bring?
Figure on $25 - $35 a day to eat lunch and dinner at the local restaurants, not including alcoholic beverages or specialty drinks (which tend to greatly increase costs, so factor that into your budget). Most people like to spend $50 to $100 on gifts for friends and family - souvenirs, textiles, ceramics, paintings, etc., and maybe a few hundred dollars for discretionary spending. We highly recommend offering tips to the drivers and guides, so factor that into your cash as well.
  • What if I’m a solo traveler, is there a single supplement to have my own room?
Yes, if you are a solo traveler and want your own room, there is a $295 per trip charge for your own private room. Alternatively, we can match you with another traveler of the same gender and you can avoid that cost (we do not spend much time in the rooms anyway). This charge will be added later as an add-on after your trip is booked. Please contact KB Tambo Travel via email at [email protected] with any questions.
  • Do you have a packing list?
Yes, a complete packing list will be emailed to you after booking.
  • What is the cancellation and change policy for this trip?
evoTrip upholds KB Tambo Travel’s policy regarding date change and cancellation. Cancellation requests must be made in writing via email to evoTrip and KB Tambo. Rescheduling: We allow date changes up to 45 days before your trip. Reach out to us and we can work with you to reschedule. Cancelling: 31 days or more before the departure date, a refund may be issued for the full amount minus 20 percent of the booking cost. Within 30 days of your departure, the trip is nonrefundable.
Testimonials
I first rode with KB Tambo when they were my fixers for the GoPro film we shot, "Lost in Peru". Since then, I have returned every year with a group of my friends to ride the trails of Peru with KB. They know what they are doing, and I can just focus on riding and having fun. The riding in Peru is some of the best in the world, hands down.

Professional Mountain Biker
My husband and I took this trip in the summer of 2018 and we really fell in love with Peru and the biking there. I appreciated the guides' ability to adjust routes to suit our skill level, and it seemed like everyone got to ride at their own pace. KB Tambo did a great job of keeping things moving smoothly (being efficient on vacation is important to me) but mostly I fell in love with Peru and her people; the culture and history.

[We] had such a blast last year that we are coming back this year to do it again. I have to deal with everything in my regular job, so its great to let KB Tambo deal with everything, I just hop in the van and ride all day. And Machu Picchu was worth every bit of the hype and more.
